Distractions.....

Ever since I got too old for the kids summer reading program at my library I have been wanting an adult reading program. Well, my favorite library has granted my wish. I got a nifty gift bag and choice of book to keep. I also get up to 4 entries in a drawing to win a kindle. Wish me luck. I already have three lists completed. Anyway the point is that I am reading other books and not the ones that were planned for the blog. I have one more list to finish, that's 3 more books to read and then I will be back on track. This has been so fun though( I know, I'm such a book nerd). Not that I will win the kindle, I never win anything. At my after- prom they gave away like a ton of stuff and cash too by drawing names. All my friends got awesome stuff, tvs, money, gift cards... I didn't get anything until the very end, my name was finally drawn. Guess what I got......a mini ironing board......yeah..... that's the only thing I have won....ever. So oh well its still fun to hope right.....?

Fantasy/ Sci- fi review

The Heroes by Joe Abercrombie

This book was well written and had good characters. BUT I didn't like it, I'm not even sure why. I just wasn't entertained by the war and male stupidity. It also got way too in depth, it was a huge book and I did get most of the way through and just got tired of it. So I gave it a chance. That said If you are a guy and/or like war then you would probably like it. It did have some interesting and well written parts. I give it 2 stars.

General Fiction Review

Radical Prunings was honestly a very strange book. It is written as a gardening magazine, so you get random gardening advice plus tidbits of the main character's life. It was different but very odd. I would only recommend it if you are a gardener. If not give it a pass. I give it 2 stars.

Next up in general fiction is Panic by Jeff Abbott.

Scimitar

This book was pretty bad...... again its not really my kind of book so its hard to badmouth it too much. It was easy to read, I didn't have to slog through it. Overall though, it wasn't much. I think the worst was the male main character, he was so shallow it was hard to believe he would believe in a cause enough to actually die for it. Not that he seemed to actually consider death, he said he was willing to die but all he did was plan for escape. I don't know, I just didn't like it. I give it one star.

Bury Me Deep

The first book I read of Megan Abbott's was so-so. But this one was great! Go read it now! "Bury Me Deep", is about a depression era woman who is married to a doctor that is gone all the time for months. She befriends a couple of local floozies and ends up meeting a rich business man at a party. She has an affair with this man and falls in love with him. I won't ruin the ending for you, but the characters have depth and it is very well written. It is actually the authors imagining of a real murder mystery, which makes it so much more interesting. I give it five stars and urge you to go read it!

Mystery Review

This book was okay, I am giving it three of five stars. It was good but a little dry. I did really like the descriptions of the flood. It is set in New Orleans before and (mostly) after the flooding of the city. It really made me feel like I was there, how horrible it would be to leave home and hope that the hurricane would do little damage and coming home to find everything gone. Or even worse riding out the storm at home and getting trapped in the attic, nasty water everywhere. The imagery was impressive but personally the characters and main plot were pretty flat. I don't think I would recommend it, it wasn't horrible but there are so many better books out there.

The song is you

I have been gone for a while but I have still been reading. This was a good book, It did take a while to get into. Its not what I usually read either, but it was interesting and it had a good ending. The characters were vivid if not sleazy. The whole book had a tinge of sleaze to it, but I think thats what the author was going for, it was the atmosphere. I would recommend this book. overall 4 of 5 stars, readability 3 of 5, plot 3 of 5
